Police Urge Nigerians to Break Silence on Suicide, Seek Support

-

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has called for greater openness, compassion and support in conversations around suicide as the world marks World Suicide Prevention Day.

The Force, in a message shared on Thursday, urged Nigerians to pay attention to people who may be struggling emotionally, noting that those experiencing suicidal thoughts may not always show visible signs of distress.

The police emphasised the importance of listening, checking in on people and offering support to those going through difficult moments.

“Taking the time to listen, check in on someone, offer support and encourage them to seek appropriate help can make a meaningful difference,” the Force said.

The NPF also called for an end to the stigma and silence surrounding suicide, saying these could prevent people from speaking openly about their experiences and seeking help.

“Let us challenge the stigma and silence that can prevent people from speaking about what they are going through,” the police said.

The Force further urged members of the public to listen without judgement, respond with compassion and encourage people who may be struggling to seek appropriate support.

The annual World Suicide Prevention Day is observed globally to raise awareness about suicide prevention, promote open conversations and encourage efforts to reduce the stigma associated with mental health and suicidal distress.
