#FG Condoles With Niger Over Deaths of Miners, Orders Probe After Suspending NSCDC Commandant

-

The Federal Government has expressed sorrow over the deaths of persons arrested during enforcement operations against suspected illegal mining in the Wushishi/Lukoto axis of Niger State, and has promised a thorough investigation into the incident.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, conveyed the government’s condolences to the Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago, as well as the state government and people, the traditional leadership and people of Wushishi, and the families and loved ones of the victims.

Idris said the Federal Government regards the protection of the lives, dignity and fundamental rights of every Nigerian as a solemn responsibility. He stressed that the circumstances surrounding the deaths require a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation.

He disclosed that the government had already moved to establish the facts. The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has suspended the Niger State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, and ordered a full investigation.

“The swift action taken by the Honourable Minister of Interior underscores the seriousness with which the Federal Government views this matter,” Idris said. According to him, the investigation will be allowed to establish exactly what happened, and appropriate action will follow its findings.

The Minister stated that the government remains committed to fighting illegal mining and other unlawful activities that threaten national security, economic resources and the environment. However, he insisted that all enforcement operations must be conducted within the law and with respect for human life and dignity.

“There will be no attempt to shield anyone found culpable,” he said. “At the same time, we mustn’t prejudge the outcome of the investigation. The Government’s responsibility is to ensure that the facts are established and that justice is served.”

Idris appealed for calm in Wushishi and across Niger State, urging residents and all concerned parties to allow the investigation to proceed without interference.

He assured the bereaved families and the people of Niger State that the Federal Government shares in their grief. He also prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and asked Almighty Allah to grant their families, the Wushishi community, and the Government and people of Niger State the strength to bear the loss.

The statement was signed by Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Information and National Orientation.
