The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered the massive deployment of police personnel, operational and intelligence assets across the state ahead of the September 26, 2026, Local Government Area elections.
The elections, covering the 17 Local Government Areas and 260 wards in the state, are being conducted by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC).
In a statement issued on Thursday, September 24, the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said CP Giwa also ordered the restriction of human and vehicular movement across the state from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on election day.
According to him, the restriction would not apply to persons performing essential duties and duly accredited election officials.
“CP Giwa has ordered the massive deployment of personnel, operational and intelligence assets across the State’s 17 Local Government Areas and 260 wards for the Saturday, September 26, 2026, Chairmanship and Councillorship Elections,” the statement said.
The Commissioner also barred quasi-security outfits from participating in election security operations.
He further directed armed security personnel attached to VIP escort duties not to accompany their principals to polling units.
The police commissioner assured residents, voters and other stakeholders of adequate security before, during and after the elections, noting that the command would work in collaboration with other security agencies.
CP Giwa urged eligible voters to come out and exercise their civic rights, while warning political parties, candidates and their supporters against electoral malpractice and actions capable of disrupting the peaceful conduct of the polls.
He stressed that anyone found violating the law would “face the full weight of the law.”
The Commissioner also appealed to members of the public to report suspicious persons, movements and activities capable of undermining the peaceful conduct of the elections to the nearest police station.
