Ajegunle Shooting: Police Detain Officer After Girl’s Death, SCID Takes Over Probe

-

The Lagos State Police Command has detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Omotayo Olajide, following a shooting incident that claimed the life of a young girl and left another injured in the Nosamu area of Ajegunle.

The incident occurred on Thursday, November 5, 2026, between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., when the police officer allegedly discharged his firearm during an operation to quell a violent clash between two rival groups.

The deceased was identified as Omole Taiwo, while the identity of the injured girl was not disclosed.

In a statement issued on Saturday, November 7, the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said preliminary findings indicated that police personnel were deployed to the area following a distress call over a violent confrontation between two rival groups identified as the Nosamu Boys and the Alayabiagba Boys.

The groups were reportedly fighting over toll collection and were armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons.

According to the police, during the operation, ASP Olajide discharged his firearm, and the bullet struck the two girls.

Both victims were immediately rushed to Ajeromi General Hospital for medical attention.

However, one of the girls was subsequently transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, where she later died, while the other victim is receiving treatment and is said to be in stable condition.

Expressing sadness over the incident, the Command said it shared in the grief of the bereaved family and regretted the loss of an innocent young life.

It disclosed that the officer had been disarmed and detained, while the investigation had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough and impartial probe.

The police said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine the appropriate legal and disciplinary actions.

The Command also assured the public that it would keep them informed of developments in the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Tijani Fatai, personally visited the bereaved family to express his condolences over the tragic incident.

During the visit, Fatai assured the family that the matter would be thoroughly investigated and that justice would be served.

He also pledged that no police personnel found culpable would be shielded from accountability.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives, adding that the investigation would be conducted in accordance with the highest standards of professionalism, transparency and accountability.

The police further appealed to members of the public with useful information that could assist the investigation to report to the nearest police station or contact the Command’s Public Relations Department.

The Command reiterated its condolences to the family of the deceased girl.
