#Amnesty International Raises Alarm Over Killings, Mob Violence in Plateau

-

Amnesty International has raised concerns over persistent killings, mob violence and gender-based violence in Plateau State, warning that the failure of Nigerian authorities to end impunity continues to endanger lives and worsen food insecurity.

The human rights organisation disclosed this in a statement published on its X handle on October 15, following a press conference and engagement with civil society organisations and activists in Jos, the Plateau State capital, on October 7, 2026.

Amnesty International Nigeria said the engagement formed part of its efforts to collaborate with local stakeholders in addressing pressing human rights concerns in the state.

The organisation lamented the prolonged bloodshed in Plateau, noting that the failure to hold perpetrators accountable had continued to put residents at risk.

“So much bloodshed has been going on in Plateau State — and for so long,” the organisation stated.

It warned that the authorities’ failure to end impunity was not only endangering lives but also accelerating food insecurity and emboldening those responsible for human rights violations.

Amnesty International also acknowledged the contributions of grassroots activists and lawyers in Plateau State, including Stella Samuel and Jacob Choji Pwakim, who it said had been working to promote accountability for human rights violations and other atrocities.

The organisation stressed the importance of sustained collaboration among civil society groups, activists and other stakeholders in confronting the human rights challenges confronting the state.

“Silence is never the answer,” Amnesty International declared, calling attention to the need for continued advocacy and accountability over abuses.

Plateau State has experienced recurring violence and deadly attacks in several communities, raising concerns over the protection of civilians, access to livelihoods and the ability of authorities to bring perpetrators to justice.
