…violation of Force Order 237
The Delta State Police Command has arrested and transferred a police officer to Force Headquarters, Abuja, for disciplinary action following the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed in a statement on Tuesday that the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the incident, describing it as an extra-judicial killing and a clear violation of police rules of engagement.
According to the statement, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, after operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command received intelligence from members of the public about the suspect, who was allegedly intercepted while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
“Police operatives were promptly deployed to the scene to take the suspect into custody. However, the police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect,” Edafe said.
The Commissioner of Police immediately ordered the arrest of the officer, who was first transferred to the State Headquarters in Asaba before being moved to Abuja.
“The officer has since been queried and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he will appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee, currently in session, for immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution,” the statement added.
The Command reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights, stressing its zero tolerance for extra-judicial actions.
“The Command emphasises respect for the rule of law, human rights, professionalism, accountability and public trust. It reaffirms its zero tolerance for lawlessness, recklessness and extra-judicial conduct,” Edafe said.
CP Oyeniyi also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be served.
“He appeals to members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, as all necessary steps are being taken to bring the culprit to justice,” the statement said.
