At Least 8 Killed, Over 15 Injured in Gunmen Attack on a Plateau Village

-

At least eight people have been killed and more than 15 others injured after suspected gunmen stormed Gwon-Ajang village in Foron District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Sunday night, May 31, 2026. Daily Post Nigeria

A community resident, Joseph Azi, said the attackers, numbering over 100 and heavily armed, descended on the village at around 10 p.m., shooting indiscriminately as residents who had already retired for the night scrambled for safety. Daily Post Nigeria

According to sources, the victims had gathered for a social event when the gunmen stormed the venue and opened fire. The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday. allAfrica.comPremium Times

The attack is the latest in a prolonged wave of violence targeting rural communities across Plateau State. Earlier this month, the Plateau State Security Council held an emergency session convened by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, where members observed that the state had remained under sustained attacks in recent months, with indications that the assaults were coordinated. The wounded were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Security agencies have been notified, though no arrests have been announced as of Monday morning.

Plateau State, situated in north-central Nigeria, has experienced repeated attacks on farming communities in recent years, displacing families and devastating agricultural livelihoods. #Securitynewsalert.com
