Benin President Assures Nation After Foiled Coup Attempt

-

Benin’s President Patrice Talon appeared on state television Sunday evening to announce that an attempted military coup earlier in the day had been thwarted and that the government had the situation “fully under control.”

The announcement was made on Benin Television (ORTB) following reports of military activity and widespread public concern throughout the day.

President Talon sought to immediately calm the nation, urging citizens to return to their normal routines.

“I would like to assure you that the situation is completely under control and therefore invite you to calmly go about your activities starting this very evening,” President Talon stated.

The President emphasised that security and public order would be maintained across the entire country following the incident.

Details regarding the perpetrators of the attempted coup and any arrests have not yet been released, but the government’s message is clear: the crisis is over, and civilian rule remains intact.
