The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged officers and soldiers of 3 Division, Nigerian Army, to remain disciplined, committed and professional, stressing that their role in addressing security challenges in Plateau State is critical to national stability.
Lieutenant General Shaibu gave the charge on Monday, January 19, 2026, during an operational visit to the headquarters of 3 Division Nigerian Army in Jos.
Addressing troops during the visit, the COAS emphasised that discipline remains the bedrock of the military profession, noting that service in the Nigerian Army is voluntary and anchored on the noble responsibility of defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
He disclosed that he had received comprehensive briefings from the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division, on the operational and welfare challenges confronting the formation, adding that the most pressing issues had already been addressed.
According to him, the Army Headquarters is providing the required combat enablers to ensure troops are adequately equipped to perform their duties effectively. “The welfare of our troops remains a top priority. We will continue to provide the enabling environment for you to do your job properly,” the COAS assured.
Lieutenant General Shaibu urged young soldiers to respect the chain of command and seek guidance from their superiors, stressing that officers bear the responsibility of mentoring subordinates toward successful and fulfilling military careers.
He also charged troops to maintain high standards of physical fitness and mental alertness, explaining that deliberate measures have been instituted to prepare personnel for the rigours and demands of military service.
Highlighting leadership at all levels, the COAS described Senior Non-Commissioned Officers as the vital link between officers and soldiers, urging them to provide effective middle-level leadership, mentorship and guidance.
On ongoing operations in Plateau State, he described the security situation as unique, assuring troops that Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP) is being properly guided and supported to achieve its mandate.
The Army Chief further encouraged personnel to channel grievances through the appropriate chain of command, assuring them that such concerns would be promptly addressed.
Reaffirming national appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigerian soldiers, Lieutenant General Shaibu urged the troops to remain proud of their service and to discharge their duties with professionalism and honour, in line with global best practices.
As part of his visit, the COAS commissioned two blocks of 30 flats for Non-Commissioned Officers and a separate block of residential accommodation for officers at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos, in furtherance of ongoing efforts to enhance troop welfare and living conditions.
