Community Vigilance Leads to Arrest of Suspect in Violent Ibadan Motorcycle Snatching

-

A 38-year-old man, Saheed Eegunjobi, is in police custody following a violent attack on a commercial motorcyclist in the Idi-Aro area of Ibadan. The arrest was the result of a swift intervention by residents and members of the Agbekoya Vigilante group.

The incident began in the Mokola area, where Eegunjobi and an accomplice, currently at large, posed as passengers. Upon reaching the Modina Area in Idi-Aro, the duo turned on the rider, 32-year-old Sakiru Tiamiyu.

According to police reports, the suspects attacked Tiamiyu with a cutlass, inflicting serious head injuries. While the victim was incapacitated, the accomplice fled the scene with the motorcycle. However, Eegunjobi was not as fortunate; he was intercepted and apprehended by alert passersby and local vigilantes before he could escape.

Personnel from the Agbekoya Vigilante group handed Eegunjobi over to the patrol team from the Idi-Aro Division. The Oyo State Police Command confirmed that the suspect has since confessed to the crime during interrogation.

The victim, Sakiru Tiamiyu, was rushed to a nearby medical facility, where he is receiving urgent treatment. Police operatives have visited the scene to document evidence and are currently tracking the fleeing accomplice to recover the stolen vehicle.

The Command praised the “critical importance” of the partnership between the police, non-state actors, and the general public. In a statement, the Command credited the leadership of Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for fostering the community-policing strategies that led to this arrest.

“The safety of lives and property remains the top priority. Through intelligence-driven, collaborative efforts involving all stakeholders, no criminal element will be allowed to hold sway in the state,” the Command stated.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and continue providing timely information to security agencies to help maintain law and order across Oyo State.
