Court grants Kwara State journalists granted bail

-

Two brothers, Dare Akogun and Abdulrasheed Akogun, who were remanded for allegedly defaming and inciting the public against the government of Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, have been granted court today 19th October 2022.

The two journalists were arrested, arraigned and remanded in the correctional centre after the Kwara State Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mallam Rafiu Ajakaye, via a petition alleging them of defamation and inciting the public against the government.

Today, it was gathered that a mild drama played out as the prosecutor was not informed that the Office of the Attorney General had taken over the case through his counsel.

The prosecutor later withdraws from the case after fourth-back arguments. Thereafter, the state counsel asked the court for 24hrs to study the bail application and apply for a counter, in a bid to detain the Akoguns further.

The court stated: “Since the police that was prosecuting the case had refused to file a counter application while still in charge, the state counsel cannot file it any longer, as such, the request of the state counsel is hereby dismissed. You should not waste our time, there is no counter-application before me.”
