The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, has warned officers and men of the command against extortion, brutality, unlawful arrests and other forms of misconduct, stressing that erring personnel and their supervisors will face disciplinary action.
Fatai spoke on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at a general lecture held at the POWA Hall, GRA, Ikeja, in compliance with a directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
The event brought together Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), Tactical Commanders, Heads of Departments (HODs) and officers from various divisions, units and sections of the command. It was aimed at reinforcing discipline, professionalism, accountability and strict adherence to established policing standards.
The CP reiterated the IGP’s directives on handling complaints against police personnel, particularly allegations of brutality, extortion, unlawful arrests and detention. He urged officers to uphold the rule of law and human rights, perform their duties lawfully and maintain public confidence. He also stressed that supervisory officers would be held accountable for the conduct of those under them.
Fatai specifically warned tactical teams against extortion, brutality, intimidation, incivility towards members of the public and other dishonest practices. He directed tactical commanders to ensure professionalism, restraint and respect for citizens’ rights, adding that operational responsibilities must not be used to exploit or harass the public.
On the use of social media, the CP directed all personnel to comply strictly with the Nigeria Police Force’s Social Media Policy. He warned that inappropriate online conduct capable of damaging the Force’s image would attract sanctions for erring officers and their supervisors.
Addressing cultism, he urged officers to intensify efforts to combat the menace. He stressed, however, that arrests must be lawful and follow due process, and prohibited “arrest by proxy” as well as the arrest of individuals without lawful justification.
He also emphasised the need to safeguard the lives and welfare of suspects in police custody, directing officers to closely supervise detainees and ensure they are treated humanely throughout their time in custody.
Ahead of the 2027 General Elections, the CP charged officers to remain neutral and professional. He directed that electioneering campaigns be closely monitored and adequate security provided to maintain peace and public order.
He further urged personnel to stay informed about local and international developments and emerging security challenges, continually improve their professional capacity, and remain vigilant against threats that could affect security in Lagos State.
Fatai charged all officers and men of the command to uphold the highest standards of integrity in the discharge of their duties. He reminded them that public trust must be earned through responsible conduct, impartial enforcement of the law and respect for the rights of every citizen.
