CP Yemi John Oyeniyi Takes Over as 24th Commissioner of Police in Delta State

-

The Delta State Police Command has officially welcomed CP Yemi John Oyeniyi, psc, acipm, mnips, as its 24th Commissioner of Police. Oyeniyi succeeds CP Aina Adesola, formally taking over the leadership of the command effective March 27, 2026.

Born on March 5, 1969, in the Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State, CP Oyeniyi brings over three decades of law enforcement experience to the role. A veteran of the “Course 4” Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) class, he was enlisted into the Force in June 1994 at the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil.

His academic background is as extensive as his field experience. He holds a B.Sc. in Sociology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and an M.Sc. in Public Order and Information Management from the University of Uyo. Furthermore, he possesses professional diplomas in Personnel Management and Community Policing, representing a blend of academic rigor and specialized vocational training.

CP Oyeniyi is no stranger to the Delta terrain, having previously served in the state between 2000 and 2005. During that period, he served as the Officer-in-Charge of both the General Investigation and Anti-Fraud Units at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

His career trajectory includes significant roles across the federation, including serving as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration) in Ondo State from 2023 to 2025. Most recently, he served as the Commissioner of Police and Deputy Head of the Interpol National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja. His experience also extends beyond Nigerian borders, having spent three years on peacekeeping missions in Sudan under both AMIS and UNMIS from 2007 to 2010.

The new Commissioner is recognized as a specialist in strategic leadership and criminal investigation. He is an associate of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (ACIPM) and a member of the National Institute of Police Studies (MNIPS).

Beyond his administrative and tactical prowess, CP Oyeniyi is described by his peers as a disciplined officer committed to ethical leadership and mentorship. Known for his analytical approach to crime-fighting, he is also a football enthusiast and a family man.

CP Yemi is a highly accomplished senior officer with extensive experience in administration, anti-fraud operations, and international law enforcement cooperation,” stated SP Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State.
