The Ministry of Defence has pledged to deepen its collaboration with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) to enhance space-based support for national security operations.
Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, reaffirmed this commitment while receiving a delegation from NASRDA, led by Director General Dr Matthew Adepoju, during a working visit to the Ship House in Abuja.
Gen. Musa emphasised that the modern security landscape requires advanced technological intervention, noting that satellite technology is critical to defeating terrorism, banditry, and trans-border crimes.
“Proactive, intelligence-driven operations are critical,” Gen. Musa stated. “Satellite-enabled surveillance, radar imaging, and signal analytics can significantly improve situational awareness, assist in identifying criminal routes and hideouts, and provide stronger operational support to troops on the frontline.”
To achieve this, the Minister called for immediate synergy between NASRDA and the Defence Space Administration (DSA) to ensure that space assets are seamlessly integrated into military logistics and combat strategies.
In response, Dr Adepoju highlighted Nigeria’s current space capabilities and existing international collaborations. He further disclosed that the federal government is prioritising the expansion of these assets to bolster defence efforts.
“President Tinubu has approved the procurement process for additional satellites, including radar systems, to strengthen national security architecture,” Dr Adepoju announced.
NASRDA presented several concepts aimed at upgrading national defence, specifically enhanced border surveillance and real-time intelligence support, designed to improve environmental awareness and operational effectiveness across the country. #Securitynewsalert.com
