The Delta State Police Command has stepped up efforts to tackle the persistent traffic congestion on the Asaba–Onitsha Expressway, bringing together security agencies, traffic managers and road contractors in a bid to ease the hardship faced by motorists ahead of the festive season.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel E. Erale, convened the strategic meeting on Tuesday at the Delta State Police Headquarters in Asaba. The gridlock, which has been worsened by ongoing construction work along the route, has been most severe around the Niger Bridge corridor.
Those in attendance included the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Commandant Chinedu Fabian Igbo, and the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Corps Commander Charles E. Edem. A representative of the Director-General of the Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DETSMA) was also present, alongside representatives of the construction contractors.
Expressing concern over the difficulties motorists face on the route, CP Erale called for coordinated action among all stakeholders to ease the traffic situation.
He stressed the need for strategic deployment of traffic personnel, prompt removal of broken-down vehicles, and effective coordination among the agencies involved.
The Commissioner also urged the contractors to provide adequate warning signs, clearly marked diversions and safe passage through the construction areas. He asked them to work closely with traffic management agencies to minimise disruptions to vehicular movement.
CP Erale reaffirmed the command’s commitment to the safety of road users and to improved traffic flow along the expressway for the duration of the construction period.
The information was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe.
