EFCC, FBI Launch Joint Probe Into Alleged Diversion of USAID Funds

-

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have opened a joint investigation into allegations of diversion and mismanagement of funds provided under United States Government-supported programmes in Nigeria.

According to officials, the probe focuses on suspected irregularities in the handling of resources allocated through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The collaboration between the EFCC and FBI underscores growing international cooperation in tackling financial crimes that cross borders.

Authorities say the investigation aims to uncover whether funds intended for development projects were improperly diverted, misused, or subjected to fraudulent practices. While details of the alleged misconduct remain under review, both agencies have pledged transparency and accountability in the process.

The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding donor funds and ensuring that international development assistance is used for its intended purpose. The FBI, meanwhile, emphasised its role in supporting Nigeria’s anti-graft efforts and strengthening bilateral ties in the fight against corruption.

Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
