EFCC Operatives Attacked During Visit to University of Uyo Teaching Hospital

-

On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, operatives of the Uyo Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) visited the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) in Akwa Ibom State to authenticate a medical report presented by a suspect currently under remand by Justice M.A. Onyetunu of the Federal High Court, Uyo.

According to EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewole, the suspect is facing charges of allegedly defrauding several microfinance banks, including the University of Uyo Microfinance Bank.

Oyewole explained that the EFCC had earlier written two letters to the hospital management, dated March 11 and April 20, 2026, requesting verification of the medical report, but received no response.

Following the silence, the Investigating Officer made a personal visit to the hospital to seek clarification, yet the request remained unanswered.

He added: “As a final measure, EFCC operatives approached the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of UUTH on Tuesday, but the visit quickly escalated into a confrontation. The hospital staff raised a false alarm, locked the operatives inside the premises, and attacked them with stones and other dangerous objects.

“The situation worsened when the CMD ordered the hospital gates shut, preventing the EFCC team from leaving. Police authorities in Akwa Ibom State intervened, advising the CMD to reopen the gates to allow the operatives to exit peacefully, but the directive was ignored. Despite the hostility, the EFCC operatives maintained restraint and eventually left the hospital without disrupting its operations.”

The Commission emphasised that enquiries related to its operational engagements are lawful and reminded both the public and corporate institutions of their obligation to cooperate with such requests.

It warned that obstructing EFCC activities could amount to a criminal offence with serious legal consequences.#Securitynewsalert.com
