The Elegant Nurses Forum (ENF) has condemned the killing of Miss Vivian Chilaka, a student of the College of Nursing Sciences, Alor, Anambra State, describing her death as a tragic loss to the nursing profession and the nation.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Nurse Thomas Abiodun Olamide, the forum expressed shock, sadness, and outrage over the circumstances surrounding the death of the young nursing student, whose body was reportedly discovered on June 14, 2026.
According to information cited by the forum, Chilaka was allegedly stabbed multiple times, with injuries reportedly inflicted around the femoral artery, resulting in severe blood loss. The statement noted that she was believed to have struggled with her attackers before being overpowered.
The forum also raised concerns about reports that a dog within the compound, known for barking at strangers and unusual movements, did not bark on the night of the incident. ENF said this development could suggest that the perpetrators may have been familiar with the area or compound. A knife believed to be connected to the crime was also reportedly found near the victim’s room.
Describing Chilaka as an exceptional student, the forum said she had overcome significant personal hardships. She reportedly lost her mother ten years ago and her father four years ago and had been helping to support her two younger brothers through her academic achievements and determination.
According to the statement, Chilaka had initially been studying Computer Science before receiving sponsorship from an individual based abroad who encouraged her to pursue nursing with the prospect of international opportunities after graduation.
The forum highlighted her outstanding academic performance, noting that during her matriculation at the College of Nursing Sciences, Alor, she won six of the seven awards presented to outstanding students.
“Her brilliance, resilience, and commitment to excellence made her a source of hope and inspiration to many,” the statement said.
The forum extended condolences to her family, classmates, lecturers, sponsor, friends, and the wider nursing community, describing her death as a devastating loss.
ENF called on security agencies to conduct a thorough, professional, and transparent investigation into the killing and urged authorities to ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of all those responsible.
The group also appealed to women’s rights organisations, anti-femicide advocates, civil society groups, and human rights organisations to monitor the case to ensure justice is served.
Among its demands, the forum called for the establishment of a special investigative team if necessary, protection for potential witnesses, and government support for the victim’s family.
The organisation further urged the Anambra State Government to immortalise Chilaka through a scholarship or academic excellence award in her name, assume responsibility for her burial expenses, and provide full educational scholarships for her two younger brothers. It also called for employment opportunities and salary support for the brothers upon completion of their studies.
“The death of Miss Vivian Chilaka is not merely a loss to her family; it is a loss to the nursing profession, to Anambra State, and to Nigeria as a whole,” the statement read.
The forum concluded by urging authorities to act swiftly to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible for the crime, stressing that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.
