#Emmanuel Acha: Ebonyi Government Accused of Suppressing Dissent, Violating Fundamental Human Rights

-

The call for justice echoed through civil society groups nationwide on Wednesday as over 100 organisations rallied behind detained activist Emmanuel Acha, accusing the Ebonyi State Government of suppressing dissent and violating fundamental human rights.

Acha, a prominent human rights advocate and chairperson of the Enugu State Civil Society Network, has been held in detention since April 2025 following what activists claim are “trumped-up charges” related to his efforts to defend the Effium community’s civil rights.

The controversy stems from Acha’s involvement in Suit No. FHC/AI/CS/FHR/221/24, a civil action he filed in defence of the Effium people amidst a longstanding ethnic conflict in Ebonyi State.

Despite its peaceful intent, the suit was met with harsh retaliation. Acha now faces criminal trial under Charge No: HKW/27C/2025, and has been repeatedly denied bail. His trial is slated to begin later this month.

“This is not just a legal issue—it is a test of our democracy,” said Fasola Oluwatomisin, Coordinator of the Action Group on Free Civic Space (AGFCS). “By detaining Emmanuel, the state sends a chilling message that lawful dissent will be punished.”

Activists argue that Acha’s arrest and trial stand in stark violation of sections 39(1) and 6(6)(b) of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, which guarantee freedom of expression
