Enugu CP Urges Youths to Shun Crime, Report Police Misconduct

-

The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has urged young people to remain focused, law-abiding and serve as worthy ambassadors of their families and professions.

The police commissioner advised during an interactive session with legal interns from Obra Legal Law Practice in Enugu, where he addressed questions on police professionalism, discipline, proactive policing, crime-fighting and the legal framework guiding the use of firearms by police officers.

According to CP Giwa, the use of firearms by officers is regulated by the Constitution, the Nigeria Police Act, 2020 (as amended), and Force Order 237.

Speaking on police patrols and stop-and-search operations, the commissioner clarified that officers do not have the authority to search citizens’ mobile phones during routine operations unless the devices are lawfully required as part of an ongoing investigation.

He also urged members of the public to report incidents of police misconduct or unprofessional behaviour, assuring that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary measures.

The legal interns, led by Senior Associate at Obra Legal Law Practice, Daniel Aloh, commended the commissioner for the opportunity to engage on policing and legal issues.

Aloh praised the Enugu State Police Command’s security efforts and said the interns would apply the knowledge gained during the engagement while continuing to support lawful policing.

Meanwhile, as part of activities marking the 2026 International Youth Day, CP Giwa congratulated young people in Enugu State and encouraged them to remain committed to their aspirations while avoiding criminal activities.

“I urge our youths to remain focused, law-abiding and committed to their aspirations,” he said.

He warned them against cultism, social, economic and political vices, and other forms of criminality, while encouraging eligible youths to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate responsibly in the 2027 general elections.

The commissioner cautioned youths against allowing themselves to be used as political thugs or agents of electoral violence and malpractice, stressing that anyone involved in such acts would face the full weight of the law.

CP Giwa also invited youths across the state to participate in the official launch of the Nigeria Police Force National Campaign Against Political and Digital Thuggery and a Police-Youth Dialogue scheduled for Saturday, August 22, 2026, in Enugu State.

According to him, the event forms part of activities commemorating International Youth Day 2026 and the Nigeria Police Force National Youth Leadership and Security Initiative, which aims to promote peaceful, free and fair elections ahead of the 2027 general
