Fatal Accident Claims Cyclist Under LASUTH Bridge in Ikeja

-

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a tragic road accident that occurred beneath the LASUTH Bridge at the Airport Road corridor in Ikeja. The incident involved a DAF articulated truck and a cyclist, resulting in the immediate death of the cyclist.

According to preliminary findings, both the truck and the cyclist were navigating the roundabout from the Maryland axis when the collision occurred. The cyclist, unable to maintain a safe distance from the moving truck, was fatally crushed on the spot.
LASTMA officials on duty swiftly apprehended the truck driver, who allegedly attempted to flee the scene.

He was handed over to officers from the Ikeja Police Division for investigation and prosecution. To prevent secondary accidents and restore traffic flow, the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) evacuated the victim’s remains.

Hon. Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved family.

He urged cyclists and commercial motorbike riders to prioritise safety, avoid highways and expressways, and adhere strictly to traffic regulations. He emphasised that the Lagos State Government has consistently carried out sensitisation campaigns to educate vulnerable road users on safe practices.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to road safety enforcement, public enlightenment, and the protection of all road users, urging motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to act responsibly to prevent avoidable tragedies.
