The Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network (CRRAN) has petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Force CID Annexe, Enugu, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of Mr Timothy Maamo Tersugh, a truck driver who has reportedly been in police detention for nearly a month without trial.
In a petition dated November 19, 2025, and signed by CRRAN President Olu Omotayo Esq., the rights group accuses A.G. Leventis Limited of using the police to oppress their employee following a road accident involving a shipment of Nigerian Breweries products.
According to the petition, the incident occurred on October 20, 2025, while Mr Tersugh was transporting beer from Enugu to Jos, Plateau State.
The driver reported that while attempting to avoid a head-on collision with an overtaking vehicle in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, he swerved into a pothole. The impact caused the ropes securing the cargo to snap, resulting in crates falling off the truck.
Mr Tersugh stated that villagers immediately swarmed the scene to loot the beer. He reported the incident to the Akwanga Divisional Police Headquarters, which deployed officers to the scene.
“The Akwanga Police that were deployed to the scene of the accident were able to stop the villagers from carting away all the crates of beer in the truck,” the petition stated, noting that video evidence exists showing police preventing further looting.
CRRAN alleges that despite the police intervention at the accident scene, A.G. Leventis Limited accused the driver of diverting and selling the goods.
Following the accident, the driver was instructed by the company to complete the delivery to Jos. However, upon arrival on October 23, 2025, he was arrested by officers from ‘A’ Division, Jos.
The petition highlights that investigators from Jos visited the accident scene in Akwanga and verified Mr Tersugh’s account. Consequently, the police reportedly prepared to grant him bail, treating the matter as a minor traffic accident.
However, A.G. Leventis Limited allegedly rejected the findings of the Jos Police and demanded that he case be transferred to Enugu.
“The Company told the A Divisional Police that they are not comfortable with the outcome… and told the Police that they will demand a transfer of the case to Enugu State,” Omotayo wrote.
Mr. Tersugh was subsequently denied bail and transferred from Jos to the Force CID Annexe in Enugu on November 14, 2025, where he remains in custody.
CRRAN has condemned the continuous detention as a gross violation of fundamental human rights. The group argues that the Enugu command lacks jurisdiction over a road accident that occurred in Nasarawa State.
“We condemn in unequivocal terms the action of A.G. Leventis Limited in making false allegations to the Police and also using the instrumentality of the Police to punish and deny this poor citizen his fundamental rights,” the petition read.
The group demands an immediate, unconditional release of Mr Timothy Maamo Tersugh and that officials of A.G. Leventis be charged for providing false information to the police.
As of the time of this report, the Enugu State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement regarding the transfer and detention of the driver.
