…Angry Nigerians Call For Stiff Punishment

By Juliana Francis

A vulcaniser identified as Onyema Okonkwo has narrated in chilling detail how he and his accomplice, Emmanuel, broke into the room of Chinwendu Achumba (also known as Wendy Achumba), a nursing student at the College of Nursing, Umulogho, in the Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State, where they sexually assaulted and killed her.

The two men carried out the attack, and Okonkwo has since confessed to the authorities. The suspects would likely have evaded justice were it not for the swift response of local youths and police, who arrested them.

They were subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) in Owerri.

In his confession, Okonkwo stated that he and Emmanuel arrived at the victim’s lodge at approximately 7: pm. Finding no one else around, they went directly to her room and demanded sex.

When she refused, they forcefully overpowered her despite her resistance. She scratched one of the suspects’ faces during the struggle. Okonkwo confessed to assaulting the victim twice, while Emmanuel did so three times.

He further admitted to attacking her with a wooden object, while his accomplice stabbed her with a knife.

Reports indicate that Okonkwo had previously made advances toward Achumba, which she had rejected. He later tracked her to her lodge with Emmanuel, where the attack took place on May 21, 2026.

The case has led to widespread outrage, with Nigerians calling for severe punishment for the perpetrators. Social media has been buzzing with heated discussion on the incident and confession of Okonkwo.

@iamshyblakj: “The animals need to be executed immediately. There is no point in parading or arranging them for justice. They confessed already; send them to hell.”

@DabotaIbiba: “The punishment for death is death. ‘We went straight to her room and asked her for sex, but she refused’ You can imagine the audacity. Making parents lose a child who went to school to build a future.”

@blissful_blisss: “He narrated raping and killing Chinwendu like he was telling a random story — no remorse, no hesitation. The law must ensure these two men never see the outside of a cell again.”

@jayHenry_1: “In a world where you can get sex easily, patronise sex workers, or choose abstinence, you choose to rape. If I were a lawmaker, the punishment would be so severe that no one in their right mind would even attempt it.”

@BolajiMs: “How many females have committed this kind of act? Please, train your male children better.”

@be_rekindled: “The heart of man is filled with evil. You cut short the life of a promising young lady because of your lust. RIP Chinwendu.”

@Fawnbrle: “Every day. Every single day. I am tired.”

@AOyatabu: “These men have forfeited their right to live among us. May the soul of Chinwendu Achumba rest in peace. Amen.”

Chinwendu Achumba is survived by her family. She was a student nurse with a promising future ahead of her. May she rest in peace.
