The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Monday flagged off the Maiden Skills Acquisition and Empowerment Programme for Spouses of Junior Police Officers, in partnership with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) and the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA).
The event was held at the MD Abubakar Police Barracks, Dei-Dei, Abuja, under the theme: “Empowering Families, Strengthening Communities: Advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda Through Skills Acquisition and Economic Empowerment.”
Hosted by the Executive Secretary of the Police Trust Fund, Alhaji Mohammed Sheidu, the programme was attended by the Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, who was represented by Mrs Bola Aderele; the National President of POWA, Chief Mrs Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu; and beneficiary spouses of junior police officers drawn from across the Force.
Speaking at the event, IGP Disu described the programme as an investment in the stability and wellbeing of police families, stressing that officer welfare cannot be separated from that of their households. He commended the wives of junior officers for the steadfast support that sustains the Force’s effectiveness and morale, and urged beneficiaries to treat the resources provided as a foundation for financial independence rather than immediate relief.
In his keynote address, the Executive Secretary of the NPTF, MMrMohammed Sheidu, said the programme reflects the Fund’s recognition that economic empowerment of police families is as vital as its investments in training and infrastructure. He noted that the vocational skills and start-up packs provided were designed to build sustainable household livelihoods, and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for inspiring the initiative. He charged beneficiaries to build businesses that uplift their families and communities.
The National President of POWA, Chief Mrs Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, described the initiative as a strategic investment in the Force’s morale and professionalism rather than an act of charity, noting that national security begins at home. She pledged POWA’s continued partnership with the NPTF to sustain the programme and called on other government agencies and corporate organisations to emulate the initiative.
