IGP Disu Opens Strategic Leadership Retreat for Senior Police Officers

-

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has officially declared open a two-day Executive Leadership Retreat for top officers of the Nigeria Police Force, as part of ongoing efforts to drive institutional reform.

The retreat, which brings together Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs) and Assistant Inspectors-General (AIGs), is being hosted by the Police Reform Secretariat in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja.

Describing the gathering as a major step in repositioning the Force, Disu said the retreat aligns with his administration’s commitment to sustainable and impactful reform.

“This retreat is a cornerstone of our policy direction, focused on achieving lasting and positive transformation within the Nigeria Police Force,” he said. “At this level of leadership, we must be guided by vision, accountability, and the ability to inspire public confidence.”

Also speaking, Olu Ogunsakin, Head of the Police Reform Secretariat and Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, highlighted progress under the Supporting Police Accountability and Transformation (SPAT) programme.

According to him, the initiative—funded by the UNDP and the German Federal Foreign Office—has recorded key milestones, including the development of a revised national recruit curriculum, the first overhaul since 1968, and the introduction of a rights-based framework under the newly gazetted Nigeria Police Regulations 2025.

Ogunsakin noted that these reforms are designed to modernize policing standards and align them with global best practices.

The Inspector-General stressed that the true measure of success from the retreat would be evident in improved operational efficiency, discipline, and strict adherence to human rights across all police commands nationwide.

The retreat features technical sessions focusing on evidence-based budgeting, community policing strategies, and digital transformation, reflecting the Force’s drive to build a more transparent, accountable, and citizen-focused institution.

As proceedings continue through March 25, the Nigeria Police Force reiterated its appreciation to the UNDP and other international partners for their continued support in strengthening the country’s policing framework. #Securitynewsalert.com
