IGP Hosts Senate Committee on Crude Oil Theft, NHRC Delegation in Strategic Security Talks

-

In a move to strengthen national efforts against economic sabotage and advance police accountability, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, hosted two high-level delegations at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on July 31, 2025.

Led by Senator Ned Nwoko, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Crude Oil Theft, the delegation met with the IGP to discuss tactical approaches to address the persistent challenge of onshore and offshore oil theft. Senator Nwoko emphasised the urgent need to meet Nigeria’s oil production goals and stated that such progress would be impossible without active collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force.

In response, the IGP expressed deep appreciation for the committee’s commitment, assuring that the Police Force remains resolute in defending critical oil infrastructure and ensuring justice against oil theft perpetrators.

He immediately tasked the Deputy Inspectors-General overseeing Operations and Intelligence to engage directly with the Committee and execute joint strategies.

On the same day, the IGP welcomed a delegation from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) led by Governing Council Chairperson, Dr. Salamatu Husaini Sulaiman, and Executive Secretary Dr. Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN. The discussions centred on enhancing human rights protection within police operations and reinforcing institutional accountability.

Dr. Ojukwu praised the IGP’s swift disciplinary action on complaints filed by citizens and applauded the recognition of outstanding officers such as SP Sentome Obi, named Police Officer of the Year 2024.
The IGP reaffirmed his dedication to embedding human rights education into all police training programs and denounced acts of unlawful detention and excessive force. He welcomed constructive criticism from the NHRC, stating it would catalyse reform and improvement across the Nigeria Police Force.
These collaborative engagements mark a pivotal step in reinforcing the values of transparency, justice, and professionalism within Nigeria’s policing framework.
