Inspectors sacked, charged with armed robbery for storming apartment with rifles

The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2 Command comprising Lagos and Ogun States, Ari Muhammed Ali, has ordered the dismissal of AP. No. 279495 Inspector Sunday Adetoye and AP. No. 223521 Inspector Ogunleye Stephen for storming an apartment without a warrant and carting away five iPhones, one Samsung smartphone, one Tecno smartphone, and two laptop computers.

According to the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, a Superintendent of Police, Umma Tunni Ayuba, both inspectors were attached to the Zonal Command Headquarters Onikan Lagos and their offences were brought down to the level of armed robbery, official corruption and illegal duty.

Ayuba stated: “The erring officers, who were at the time facing trial for a similar offence, on November 23, 2023, at about 10:PM, went in the company of two members of Vigilante Group, Semiu Afisu, Abidoye Femi, and Charles John, who is a driver, to the residence of one Taiwo Monsuru, and Akintola Sunday, at Obada-Oko in Ogun State.

“They were armed with two SMG rifles and live ammunition, searched without a warrant where they made away with 5 iPhones, one Samsung smartphone, one Tecno smartphone, and two laptop computers.”

The image manager explained that Police Officers attached to the Ifo Division mounted a roadblock after other residents of the apartment informed them of the incident with the description of the vehicle, which led to the arrest of the occupants of the vehicle.

“However, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, (ASP), Ajayi Victor, who led the illegal operation and is currently at large,” said Ayuba.

Ayuba explained that  AIG Ari directed that the dismissed officers be charged to court alongside the civilians involved, while he urged all officers and men of the force to remain professional in the discharge of their duties following the law, as anyone found wanting will be accountable for his/her action or inaction.

He further emphasized that the current management of the Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, will not tolerate any form of unprofessional and corrupt practice, while he implored members of the public to always report unprofessional conduct of officers and men, as the Police are always there for the protection of all.
