Kogi: Amnesty International Demands Action over Deadly Attack, Mass Abduction

-

Amnesty International Nigeria has condemned a violent attack on the Ayegunle Bunu community in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, where armed men killed one person and abducted more than 30 others, including passengers travelling in a commercial bus.

The incident, which occurred on June 1, 2026, has been described by Amnesty International as a grave violation of international human rights law, infringing on the rights to life, liberty, and security of persons.

The organisation noted that the attack underscores the persistent vulnerability of rural communities and travellers in Nigeria to armed violence and mass abductions.

In a statement released Tuesday, Amnesty International called on Nigerian authorities to investigate the attack, secure the safe release of all abducted individuals, and ensure that those responsible are identified, arrested, and prosecuted in fair trials urgently and transparently.

The group further urged the government to strengthen protection measures for at-risk communities and to take concrete steps to prevent similar attacks in the future.
