The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading reports alleging that Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Khan Salihu was kidnapped by suspected criminals before his death.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Command described the publication as “false, reckless, and highly irresponsible,” stressing that the late senior police officer was never kidnapped at any time before his demise.
According to the police, DCP Salihu briefly complained of feeling unwell and was immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention. However, doctors reportedly confirmed him dead upon arrival.
“For the avoidance of doubt, DCP Khan Salihu was never kidnapped at any time before his demise. The report is entirely false, misleading, and a complete fabrication with no basis in fact whatsoever,” the statement said.
The Command expressed concern that a recognised media organisation published the story without verifying the information from relevant authorities, describing the report as a serious breach of professional journalism standards.
Police authorities noted that the publication not only misinformed the public but also caused unnecessary distress to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased officer, who they described as a dedicated and accomplished senior police officer.
The Command further condemned the report as insensitive, particularly at a time when family members and associates are mourning the loss of the officer.
Consequently, the Lagos State Police Command called for the immediate withdrawal of the publication and urged the media organisation responsible to issue a public correction and apology in the interest of truth, professionalism, and accountability.
The police also advised members of the public to disregard the report and rely solely on information released through official channels.
Reaffirming its commitment to combating misinformation, the Command pledged to continue providing accurate, timely, and verified information to the public.
