LASTMA Arrests Tanker Driver After Fatal Crash Claims Two Lives on Epe–Ijebu Road

-

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the arrest of a tanker driver following a fatal road traffic accident that claimed the lives of a commercial motorcyclist and his passenger at Pokia Junction, inward Araga, along the Epe–Ijebu Road in the Epe area of Lagos State.

According to LASTMA, the incident involved an empty Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) tanker and a commercial motorcycle conveying a male passenger. Preliminary findings revealed that the motorcyclist was travelling against traffic on a prohibited one-way route when he was struck by the tanker, which was reportedly moving at high speed.

“The violent impact proved fatal, resulting in the instantaneous death of both the rider and his passenger,” the agency stated.

LASTMA operatives were said to have swiftly mobilised to the scene, demonstrating what the authority described as professionalism and prompt emergency response. The tanker driver was immediately apprehended, while the area was cordoned off to prevent further accidents and ensure public safety. Relevant security agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), were also notified.

The remains of the deceased victims, alongside the arrested tanker driver, were subsequently handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force at the Noforija Police Division for further investigation and necessary legal action.

To ease traffic congestion along the busy corridor, LASTMA officials promptly evacuated the tanker from the roadway, restoring free flow of vehicular movement in the area.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the crash as a tragic reminder of the dangers associated with traffic law violations.

“This unfortunate loss of lives was entirely avoidable. Had the motorcyclist remained within his lawful lane and observed a moderate speed, this fatal incident would not have occurred,” Giwa said.

He cautioned commercial motorcyclists and other road users against disobeying traffic regulations, particularly the dangerous practice of driving against traffic and competing for right of way with heavier vehicles.

Giwa further reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State Government to strengthen traffic law enforcement across the state to protect lives and property, urging motorists to embrace responsible driving habits and strict compliance with traffic rules.
