The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has announced that it successfully rescued 670 accident victims following 1,409 road traffic crash interventions across Lagos State within the past nine months.
According to the General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the figures highlight LASTMA’s critical role in safeguarding lives and ensuring safer roads in the state. He noted that operatives are routinely deployed to crash scenes to assess situations, rescue victims, divert traffic, and prevent secondary collisions.
The agency emphasised that its interventions not only save lives but also help reduce congestion and restore traffic flow, while working closely with other emergency responders including LASEMA, LASAMBUS, SEHMU, and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
Mr Bakare-Oki reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to strengthening incident-response capabilities and intensifying public awareness campaigns. He urged motorists to obey traffic signals, maintain roadworthy vehicles, wear seat belts, and avoid reckless driving. He stressed that defensive driving and responsible motoring remain vital safeguards against preventable crashes.
He further appealed to drivers, commercial operators, dispatch riders, and pedestrians to report crashes and obstructions promptly via LASTMA’s toll-free short code 3367, reiterating that road safety is a collective responsibility.
The General Manager warned that traffic crashes often result in fatalities, severe injuries, economic losses, and emotional trauma for families.
He maintained that strict adherence to traffic regulations and regular vehicle inspections are essential to reducing these consequences.
LASTMA pledged to continue advancing proactive incident response, strengthening inter-agency collaboration, and sustaining road safety advocacy across Lagos State.
