The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a firm warning to residents, event organisers, religious institutions, community leaders and social groups against blocking access roads during the upcoming festive season.
The agency expressed concern over the recurring practice of using public roads for celebrations, religious gatherings and other socio-cultural activities, an action it says consistently disrupts traffic flow and subjects motorists to avoidable gridlock, safety hazards and undue hardship.
LASTMA stressed that all road corridors across the state, including inner streets and major routes, are public assets that must not be appropriated for private events or religious activities.
The agency also issued a direct caution to operators of event centres, lounges, clubs and entertainment hubs, particularly those in high-traffic areas such as Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki, Shongotedo and neighbouring districts.
Management of such facilities has been directed to provide adequate and controlled parking for their customers. Any establishment whose patrons obstruct major roads with indiscriminate parking will face strict enforcement actions, penalties and possible closure in line with existing traffic laws.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, delivered the message over the weekend during an inspection tour of major traffic-prone corridors across Lagos, accompanied by senior officials of the agency.
Bakare-Oki reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to ensuring free vehicular and pedestrian movement during the festive period, a time known for increased celebrations and heightened traffic volume. He said the agency will intensify surveillance, boost field operations and implement proactive traffic management strategies aimed at preventing obstructions, curbing illegal parking and addressing other traffic violations.
He urged residents, event organisers and facility managers to act responsibly by obtaining necessary permits, making proper logistics arrangements and cooperating fully with LASTMA and other relevant agencies to ensure a safe and orderly festive season.
The General Manager reiterated that the agency will apply the full weight of the law against individuals or organisations that disrupt free movement or violate traffic regulations.
Bakare-Oki added that LASTMA has strengthened its emergency response system to ensure rapid clearance of breakdowns, swift response to incidents and prompt restoration of traffic across all major corridors.
He also reminded the public that LASTMA’s toll-free hotline, 080000527862, remains available for motorists requiring urgent road traffic assistance.
