Lawyers Allege Assault, Illegal Detention by Police Task Force in Lagos

-

Tension has risen following allegations that operatives of a police task force led by CSP Adetayo Akerele forcefully invaded a site and violently arrested a group of lawyers, detaining them until late at night.

According to reports circulating on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) via Objectv Media, the incident occurred while the lawyers were reportedly carrying out legal duties connected to a dispute involving suspected land grabbers.

Eyewitness accounts claim that the task force operatives used force during the arrest and subsequently detained the lawyers at the state police command for several hours. The lawyers were allegedly threatened and intimidated, with claims that their lives were put at risk during the ordeal.

Sources familiar with the matter alleged that the lawyers had initiated legal proceedings against individuals suspected of engaging in land-grabbing activities, which may have triggered the confrontation.

As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. Efforts to reach CSP Akerele for comment were unsuccessful.

The development has sparked concerns among legal practitioners and civil society groups, who have called for an independent investigation into the incident and protection for lawyers carrying out their professional duties. #Securitynewsalert.com
