*Leadership in Policing Is Demonstrated Through Action*

-

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, continues to demonstrate that professional policing is not achieved merely through speeches or policy pronouncements, but through responsive, principled, and decisive leadership.

On 25 July 2026, RULAAC submitted a petition to the Inspector-General regarding the arbitrary arrest, unlawful detention, and apparent abuse of police powers against Engr. Leonard Uzoma and Mr Ndubuisi Uchehara by officers of the Force Intelligence Department.
The petition raised serious concerns about the apparent misuse of police powers to victimise a complainant in a pending police investigation and a fundamental rights enforcement action.
Recognising the urgency of the matter, particularly in view of reports about Engr. Uzoma’s deteriorating health, we appealed for the Inspector-General’s intervention.
We are pleased that the Inspector-General responded promptly. We were informed that he directed the immediate release of the two men, and his Principal Staff Officer communicated his order to the family.
This prompt intervention reinforces public confidence that under IGP Tunji Disu’s leadership, complaints of abuse of police powers will receive attention and that officers who act outside the law cannot assume they have institutional cover.
We commend the Inspector-General for demonstrating, through action, his commitment to professionalism, respect for the rule of law, due process, and the protection of human rights. Leadership is measured not only by the standards one sets but by the willingness to enforce them consistently and decisively.
While this intervention is commendable, we trust that the Inspector-General will also ensure a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest and detention of the victims, hold any culpable officers accountable, and safeguard the integrity of the ongoing investigations.
This is the kind of leadership that strengthens the credibility of the Nigeria Police Force and inspires public confidence.
Mr Okechukwu Nwanguma is the  Executive Director, RULAAC.
