…NPF Collaborates UNODC to Strengthen NPF Oversight, Accountability

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, as part of the drive to build effective, efficient, and lasting human rights-based policing within the Force has directed the commencement of a two-day workshop for the Legal Department of the Nigeria Police Force from Tuesday 7th May, 2024.

The IGP, who was represented by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department, DIG Alabi Abiodun Sylvester, FDC, noted that the programme’s primary objective is to equip police officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to handle matters that are human rights-based and gender-sensitive by promoting a culture of respect for human rights and adherence to the rule of law.

Similarly, the Nigeria Police through collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), seeks to strengthen the oversight and accountability mechanisms, thereby ensuring that police operations are conducted with transparency, integrity, and respect for human rights. This is being achieved via a workshop, themed “Projects to strengthen the oversight and accountability mechanisms of the Nigeria Police,” which commenced on the 7th and will run till the 9th of May, 2024, at the Bolton White Hotel, FCT, Abuja. It will bring together Complaint Response Unit (CRU) officers from various commands across the country.

The Inspector General of Police extends his appreciation to the UNODC for its support and collaboration in organizing this important training program. He equally emphasizes that this initiative aligns with the broader goal of creating a Police that upholds the rule of law, safeguards human rights, and enhances public trust and confidence.
