The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammad MatDrlle, has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of Nigerian Air Force (NAF) personnel in an aircraft crash near a naval base in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State on Monday.
The NAF ATR-42 aircraft, carrying 25 officers and 7 crew members, was on a routine operational flight from Benin to Lagos when the accident occurred, according to a statement from the minister’s office.
Matawalle described the crash as a tragic and painful loss to the Armed Forces of Nigeria. He said the deaths of personnel in the line of duty highlight the risks and sacrifices inherent in military service, as well as the military’s commitment to defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and national security.
“I received with profound sadness the news of the crash of the Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft,” the minister said. He called the loss of the personnel “a painful reminder of the sacrifices routinely made by members of our Armed Forces.”
He added that the nation honours the courage, dedication and service of all those involved, and that their commitment “will not be forgotten.” He extended his thoughts to their families, colleagues, comrades and loved ones.
On behalf of the Ministry of Defence, Matawalle joined President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, in offering condolences to the bereaved families, the Nigerian Air Force and the entire Armed Forces.
The minister also prayed for the repose of the departed and for strength for those left behind. “May the memories of these gallant officers and men, who paid the ultimate price in service to our nation, remain eternally blessed,” he said.
Matawalle further reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces to protecting the lives of military personnel, upholding the highest standards of operational safety, and continuing to fulfil their constitutional responsibilities in defence of the nation.
