Military Neutralises Terrorist IED Threat Along Critical Zamfara Highway

-

Troops serving under Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, averted a potential tragedy in Zamfara State on Thursday after discovering and safely detonating an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by terrorists along a major transit route.

The successful operation took place on August 27, 2026, in the Bukkuyum Local Government Area following direct intelligence reports regarding suspicious activity along the vital Gurusu–Gwashi Road.

Military officials confirmed that Sector 2 personnel moved swiftly to secure the location after receiving actionable information from local sources. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit was dispatched to the scene, neutralising the hazard before it could harm local commuters or commercial traffic.

Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, Media Information Officer for Joint Task Force (Northwest) Operation FANSAN YAMMA, detailed the tactical response following the disposal.

“Troops identified the explosive device, secured the area to prevent harm to road users, and successfully facilitated the safe disposal of the IED by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team,” Danja stated. “Following the operation, troops sustained aggressive patrols in the general area to deny terrorists freedom of action.”

The interception highlights ongoing military efforts to secure critical infrastructure and transit corridors in the North West against armed groups turning to asymmetrical warfare tactics.

“The successful operation underscored the commitment of Operation FANSAN YAMMA to protecting lives, safeguarding critical routes, and countering the evolving tactics of terrorist elements across the Joint Operations Area,” Danja added.

Addressing local communities, the Joint Task Force emphasised that civilian cooperation remains central to their operational strategy, calling for continued alertness from residents.

“Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious objects or activities to security agencies,” Danja emphasised. “Timely information continues to play a vital role in preventing attacks and enhancing public safety.”

Security forces have since intensified patrol sweeps across Bukkuyum LGA to secure the surrounding rural roads and prevent further infiltration by hostile elements.
