Nigerian Army Crowned Africa’s Top Land Force As COAS Reaffirms Troop Welfare On Front Lines

-

The Nigerian Army has solidified its standing as a premier fighting force on the continent while doubling down on its commitment to the men and women in the trenches.

The force was recently honoured as the “Best Land Force in National Defence in Africa” for the 2021/2022 period at the 17th Africa Security Watch Conference Award held in Banjul, Gambia. This continental recognition provided a prestigious backdrop to the Army’s current domestic efforts, most notably the 2026 Eid-el-Fitr celebrations held for troops on the frontlines of Operation WHIRL STROKE.

Gathering at Government Secondary School Awe, troops from Benue, Taraba, and Nasarawa States joined high-ranking officials and traditional leaders, including the Emir of Awe, HRH Alhaji Dr. Isah Abubakar Umar II, for a Sallah Luncheon. The event served as a tactical pause to bolster morale amid ongoing operations against kidnapping and banditry in the region.

Representing the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Commander of the 4 Special Forces Command, Major General OA Awolo, emphasised that the spiritual discipline of the season mirrors the professional rigour required of the modern soldier.

“The welfare of our officers and soldiers remains a central pillar of my leadership and command philosophy,” Lieutenant General Shaibu stated in his message to the troops. “The strength of the Army lies not only in its operational capabilities but also in the morale and well-being of its personnel. We remain committed to improving living conditions and enhancing professional development for every soldier and their families.”

The COAS also noted the symbolic importance of the 2026 calendar, which saw a rare convergence of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and the Christian Lenten season. He described this alignment as a testament to the “unity and mutual respect” that defines the Nigerian military fabric.

Reflecting on the mission’s practical successes, the Force Commander of Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE, Major General Moses Gara, highlighted recent victories that justified the day’s celebration.

“This gathering is an avenue to appreciate and motivate our troops for their recent operational successes,” Major General Gara said. “The rescue of kidnapped victims and the neutralisation of criminal elements are clear evidence of this task force’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace and stability to these states.”

The ceremony was not without solemn moments, as the leadership paid tribute to fallen heroes who gave their lives in defence of the nation. However, the atmosphere remained resilient, bolstered by cultural performances from the Jukun Cultural Dance Group and talent exhibitions by the soldiers themselves.

Brigadier General DC Nwakonobi, Commander of Sector 2 OPWS, noted that the high-level visit and the recognition of the troops’ hard work had a tangible impact on those in the field.

“This event has significantly boosted troop morale and reinforced our sense of belonging,” Brigadier General Nwakonobi remarked during the vote of thanks. “We assure the nation of our continued vigilance and dedication in addressing all security challenges.”

The Nigerian Army leadership concluded the event by expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his strategic leadership, noting that the synergy between sister services remains the critical driver behind the Army’s recent accolades on the African stage.
