Nigerian Navy Exonerates Superior Officer Accused of Causing Death of Female Rating

-

The Nigerian Navy has dismissed as false and misleading reports circulating on social media alleging that a female rating died after being subjected to punishment by a superior officer at a naval facility in Lagos.

The claims, which have gained attention online, alleged that a naval personnel identified as WO Yusuf became critically ill after she was allegedly ordered to carry out extra duties under harsh weather conditions following her absence from work on May 19, 2026.

According to the viral account, the officer reportedly informed her superior upon returning to duty the following day that she had been experiencing health challenges and required medical attention. The social media narrative further alleged that her explanation was rejected and that she was assigned extra labour before later collapsing and dying.

Reacting to the reports, the Nigerian Navy said it had observed with concern the spread of what it described as inaccurate information linking the death of the female rating to the actions of a female lieutenant commander.

“The Nigerian Navy has noted with concern the circulation of false and misleading claims regarding the unfortunate death of a female rating, allegedly linked to the actions of a female lieutenant commander,” the statement said.

The Navy expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and colleagues, while assuring the public that it remained committed to its values and professional standards.

“The Nigerian Navy extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time,” the statement added.

“We recognise the public interest surrounding the matter and wish to reassure all concerned that the Nigerian Navy remains committed to its core values of integrity, professionalism and respect for human dignity.”

The Navy also stated that the circumstances surrounding the incident and the cause of death would be communicated directly to the family while respecting medical confidentiality.

“The facts surrounding the incident and the underlying cause of death will be communicated to the family, while remaining sensitive to the confidential nature of medical matters,” it said.

The service further urged members of the public to avoid speculation and refrain from sharing unverified information.

“We urge the public to refrain from speculation or spreading unverified information and to respect the privacy of the bereaved family so they grieve in peace,” the statement added.

The incident has continued to attract public attention online, with calls for clarity on the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death. #Securitynewsalert.com
