Nigerian Troops Apprehend Three ISWAP Recruitment Agents in Borno

-

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have successfully intercepted a suspected recruitment cell for the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the border town of Banki, Borno State.

The operation, which took place on January 17, led to the arrest of three suspects allegedly targeting local youths for terrorist training.

Following a tip-off provided by the Banki District Head, intelligence operatives were deployed on a covert mission to track the group’s activities. The suspects were apprehended while reportedly attempting to organise the transport of recruits. Authorities identified the individuals as 23-year-old Gajibo Kayama, 22-year-old Tahiru Modu, and 24-year-old Bulama Modu.

According to security sources, the trio was specifically targeting young men between the ages of 17 and 20. Preliminary investigations suggest the recruits were being prepared for movement to ISWAP-controlled areas in Adamawa State for specialised training. A source noted that the group was intercepted in the middle of attempting to convey these youths out of Banki town.

The investigation revealed a concerning trend regarding the suspects’ backgrounds. All three were identified as former members of ISWAP who claimed to have surrendered and repented approximately five years ago. However, authorities believe they have since returned to active service for the insurgent group under the guise of civilians.

The three suspects have been transferred to the Military Intelligence Regiment for further interrogation and profiling.
