NOPRIN condemns conduct of Constable Belesa Iyangedue

-

Network on Police Reform in Nigeria (NOPRIN FOUNDATION) is appalled and deeply saddened by the recent incident in which a minor was sexually assaulted while in detention at the Divisional Police headquarters,Tse Agbaragba in the Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State by Belasa Iyangedue, a now dismissed Constable attached to the Benue State Police Command.

This incident is a grave violation of trust, a gross abuse of power, an affront to the principles of justice and human rights, and the duty of the Nigeria Police Force to protect the vulnerable.

We strongly condemn this act and demand swift and transparent action from the Nigeria Police Force to bring the perpetrator to justice. It is essential that a thorough investigation is conducted, and the accused officer is held accountable for his actions. The victim and her family must be provided with all necessary support during this difficult time.

This incident highlights the urgent need for comprehensive reform and training within the Nigeria Police Force to prevent such atrocities from occurring in future. We call on the Nigeria Police Force and other key stakeholders to take immediate steps to ensure the safety and well being of all individuals in police custody, especially minors.

NOPRIN Foundation stands in solidarity with the victim and her family and joins the community in demanding justice. We also urge the public to support organizations and initiatives working tirelessly to reform the criminal justice system and protect the rights of citizens.

NOPRIN Foundation remains committed to advocating for justice, accountability, and the protection of rights and dignity of all individuals. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and collaborate with other stakeholders dedicated to reforming the Nigeria Police Force.
