The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 49-year-old security guard, Oladapo Felix, following the shooting of a resident at Zion Estate, Yakoya Area of Elewuro, Akobo, Ibadan. Police say four locally made single-barrel guns and a machete were recovered from his duty post.
The incident occurred at about 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, when the victim, Bolaji Oladipupo, stepped out of his residence to pump water and reportedly heard the sound of a siren. According to police, Oladipupo went outside to investigate but was confronted by the guard.
“I identified myself as a resident of the house, but he still shot me,” Oladipupo told investigators. He is currently receiving medical treatment and is said to be responding well.
Police operatives from Akobo Division promptly visited the scene and arrested Felix. During questioning, the suspect admitted to shooting the victim. A search of his duty post led to the recovery of two serviceable locally made single-barrel guns, two unserviceable ones, and a machete.
“The Command appreciates the invaluable contribution of private security guards to the protection of lives and property,” said DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, Police Public Relations Officer. “However, we urge them to remain professional, disciplined, and emotionally restrained in the discharge of their duties. Security personnel must exercise sound judgment and not allow anger or provocation to dictate their actions.”
Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. “We will establish all relevant facts and take appropriate action in accordance with the law,” he stated.
Police say efforts are ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including how the firearms came into the suspect’s possession.
