The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed a suspected murder incident in the Ori-Apata Oderemi area of Ido in Ibadan, following the discovery of the body of a 62-year-old woman.
Securitynewsalert.com gathered that the incident was reported by a resident who found the woman’s lifeless body along a bush path within the community.
“The incident was reported to the Police by a good Samaritan who discovered the lifeless body of a 62-year-old woman in a bush path within the community,” the command said in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka.
Police authorities disclosed that detectives who visited the scene discovered that the body had likely remained at the location for several days before it was found.
“Upon receipt of the report, detectives promptly visited the scene where preliminary findings revealed that the corpse had been at the location for at least seven days before its discovery,” the statement added.
The police said the body was evacuated to Adeoyo General Hospital for autopsy and post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Investigators also sealed off the scene while forensic experts gathered evidence as part of efforts to identify and prosecute those responsible. Authorities said the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
The command confirmed that two suspects have already been arrested in connection with the incident.
“Preliminary investigation has led to the arrest of two suspects now identified as Muhammed Sanusi, 42, and Ogbu James Ajah, 40, both residents of the Ori-Apata area, Ido,” the statement said. “The suspects are currently in custody at the State CID and are assisting the Police with ongoing investigations, while efforts are being intensified to apprehend any other accomplices linked to the crime.”
The incident reportedly triggered protests among family members of the deceased and residents of the community before calm was restored.
“The unfortunate development initially triggered protests by aggrieved family members and sympathisers within the community,” the police noted. “However, the situation was swiftly brought under control through the timely intervention of the Divisional Police Officer, Ido Division, in collaboration with the Local Government Chairman, who appealed to the bereaved family and urged members of the public not to take the law into their hands.”
Security presence has since been increased in the area, with joint patrols and deployment of tactical teams to reassure residents and maintain order.
In a show of support, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Femi Haruna, visited the community alongside officials of the Oyo State Government to assess the situation and sympathise with the family of the deceased.
The command also expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for what it described as “continued support and strategic guidance in enhancing the Command’s operational effectiveness.”
Police assured residents that investigations are ongoing and promised justice for the victim.
“The Oyo State Police Command assures members of the public that no stone will be left unturned in unravelling the circumstances surrounding this heinous act and ensuring that justice is served,” the statement said, urging residents to remain calm and provide credible information that could assist investigators.
