Panic Averted: Police Debunk Rumours of Bandit Invasion at Kwale Girls’ School

-

The Delta State Police Command has moved swiftly to dispel widespread rumours alleging a bandit invasion at Girls’ Secondary School, Utagba-Ogbe, Kwale, describing the reports as “entirely false and misleading.”

Panic gripped the community on the morning of November 24, 2025, following the circulation of unverified reports claiming that the school was under attack around 9:30 AM. The misinformation, which originated among students and was amplified by online channels, alleged that gunshots had been fired, leading many parents to rush to the institution to retrieve their children.

Upon receiving the distress reports, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, ordered an immediate tactical response. A patrol team led by SP Udofia Kufre, the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) of the Kwale Division, was deployed to the scene for an on-the-ground assessment.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, the investigation confirmed that no security breach had occurred. “The Vice Principal of the school and the security man on duty were interviewed, and both confirmed that no attack occurred and that the panic emanated solely from misinformation among students,” Edafe stated.

To ensure the safety of the wider area, police operatives extended their checks to adjoining schools within the Kwale axis. All institutions were found to be calm, safe, and conducting normal academic sessions. The Police Command has assured parents and guardians that the situation is fully under control and that normalcy has been restored to the area.

CP Olufemi Abaniwonda issued a stern warning regarding the spread of unverified information, noting that such rumours are capable of causing unnecessary fear and disrupting the academic calendar.

The Commissioner reiterated the Command’s resolve to protect educational institutions across the state. He further urged school authorities to strengthen internal communication channels, promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police formation, and maintain close collaboration with local security outfits to enhance monitoring around school environments. The police have urged the public to disregard the rumours and go about their lawful duties without fear.
