The Oyo State Police Command has arrested three men suspected of belonging to an armed robbery gang that killed a 44-year-old woman, Mrs Rukayat Wahab, during a night-time attack in the Wofun Olodo area of Ibadan.
The attack happened at about 2:30 a.m. on August 4, 2026, when gunmen stormed the home of one Alhaji Olatokunbo. They killed his wife, Mrs Wahab, and left other occupants of the house with serious injuries.
At gunpoint, the robbers made off with several mobile phones, wristwatches, $400 and other valuables, together worth about ₦3.493 million.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, ordered the case transferred to the command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) for investigation and the arrest of those responsible.
According to police, the unit launched an intelligence-led investigation that, with the help of technology, produced credible leads and led to a targeted operation.
At about 9:00 p.m. on October 2, 2026, operatives were led to a suspected criminal hideout in the Sabo area of Ibadan, where three suspects were arrested.
They are Akinrinola Oluwatobi, 28; Okunola Mathew, 24; and Ibrahim Rabiu, 23.
Police said an iPhone 7 Plus belonging to one of the victims of the Wofun Olodo attack was recovered from the suspects.
During an identification parade, surviving victims reportedly picked out the three suspects from a line-up as members of the gang that attacked their home.
Police also said the suspects confessed to taking part in the robbery, carting away valuables worth about ₦3.493 million, and killing MMrsWahab during the operation. They allegedly admitted involvement in several other robberies in the Wofun Olodo and Akobo areas of Ibadan, which police say have given investigators additional leads.
The Commissioner has directed the VCRU and other units to step up efforts to arrest the remaining gang members still at large, as well as anyone suspected of receiving or disposing of proceeds of the gang’s crimes.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the command assured residents that it would continue to use intelligence, technology, professional investigation and community partnership to combat violent crime in the state. It also urged members of the public to keep providing timely and credible information to the police.
