Police Officers are Public Servants, Not Masters, Says CP Enugu to His Men

-

The Commissioner of Police for Enugu State, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has issued a stern reminder to his officers regarding their conduct, emphasising that their primary role is to serve the public rather than dominate them.

Speaking during the monthly strategic conference held on Wednesday at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess on Agbani Road, CP Giwa urged personnel to maintain the highest levels of professionalism and diligence in their daily operations.

“You are public servants, not masters,” CP Giwa told the assembled officers. “You are duty-bound to serve citizens with professionalism and diligence. Never see yourselves as being over the people you are meant to protect.”

During the session, the Commissioner relayed new, high-level directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu. These orders specifically target common areas of police misconduct that have historically sparked public friction and legal challenges.

The Commissioner specifically cautioned officers against interference in land disputes and other civil matters, noting that such involvement is outside their primary mandate. He also condemned the practice of parallel investigations, where the same case is handled across multiple commands or offices. According to CP Giwa, these practices waste valuable man-hours and significantly undermine the image of the Force. Furthermore, he issued a sharp warning against unlawful and prolonged detention of suspects and other unprofessional conduct.

CP Giwa challenged the senior officers to lead by example, stressing that discipline remains the bedrock of the Force. He urged them to remain hardworking and committed to sustaining the Command’s proactive and results-driven crime-fighting strategies across the state.

“We must remain committed to sustaining our crime-fighting strategies,” he added. “Unprofessional conduct will not be tolerated.”

The conference was attended by a high-level delegation, including Deputy and Assistant Commissioners of Police, Area Commanders, and Commanding Officers of the Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadrons.

Heads of various tactical, operational, investigative, and administrative units were also present to receive the updated operational guidelines. #Securitynewsalert.com
