Police Shoot Three, Detain Officers After Unrest in Lagos Community

-

Three people are being treated for gunshot wounds after police officers opened fire during a confrontation with a crowd in the Onosa community of Elemoro, Lagos State, early Friday morning. The officers involved have since been taken into custody.

According to a statement from the Lagos State Police Command, the incident occurred when six officers on a routine patrol encountered what they described as an “irate mob.” The police stated that the officers used their firearms to ensure their own safety, which resulted in the injuries.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, responded by personally leading a detachment of officers to the scene. They dismantled barricades and restored the free flow of traffic. In an effort to de-escalate tensions, CP Jimoh met with youth and community leaders and has invited them for further dialogue.

The Command has launched an investigation into the shooting, with Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, promising a “thorough and transparent inquiry.”

While normalcy has been restored, a significant police presence remains in the area. Authorities are urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement.
