Policeman Caught on Viral Video Shooting at Unarmed Civilian’s Vehicle in Asaba, Arrested, Under Investigation

-

A disturbing video showing a police officer firing at a moving vehicle in Asaba has sparked outrage and swift action from the Delta State Police Command.

The footage, which circulated widely on social media, captured the officer shooting at the car of an unarmed citizen, prompting immediate condemnation from law enforcement authorities.
Following a thorough review of the video, the Command confirmed that the officer’s conduct was “unprofessional and unbecoming of a police officer.” In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, the Command emphasised that no officer is permitted to discharge a firearm without adhering to the strict guidelines of Force Order 237.

The officer involved has been identified, summoned, and detained at the Command headquarters. Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, has ordered an internal disciplinary process to begin immediately. The officer has been queried, and a formal investigation is now underway.

While the officer was reportedly responding to a hit-and-run incident, the Command reiterated that such circumstances do not justify the use of firearms without proper authorisation. “It is the duty of every Nigerian Police officer to protect lives and property, not to endanger them,” the statement read.

CP Abaniwonda assured the public that the erring officer will face appropriate sanctions in line with the Police Act and existing regulations. He stressed that the Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property across Delta State and that this incident will serve as a deterrent to others.
The Command’s response underscores a growing demand for accountability and professionalism within the Nigerian Police Force, especially in the age of viral media and public scrutiny.
