Public Outcry Over Yahaya Bello’s Continued Freedom Amid ₦80 Billion Corruption Allegations

-

A viral social media post has reignited public frustration over the perceived inaction of Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in prosecuting high-profile political figures.

The post, shared by user @dangbanamanager, known online as iDAN, criticised the EFCC for allegedly turning a blind eye to former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, who faces accusations of embezzling ₦80 billion.

In the tweet, iDAN expressed outrage that Bello remains free and active in political circles, stating:  “Yahaya Bello, accused of stealing ₦80 billion, still walks free. You always fail to do your job when it involves politicians, yet you’re quick to raid the homes of ordinary students.”

The post also condemned Bello’s public campaigning despite the corruption charges, warning of growing public unrest: “The fire that will reset this country is already heating up, and when it spreads, it will consume everything in its path. Time is ticking.”

Adding fuel to the controversy, the tweet included a quote attributed to Yahaya Bello, in which he appeared to endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a transformative figure: “We will not wait for God to send an angel with wings to fly into Nigeria to fix it. Should I tell you who the angel is? The angel is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

The EFCC has yet to issue a formal response to the renewed criticism. Meanwhile, public discourse continues to intensify around the agency’s handling of corruption cases involving political elites versus ordinary citizens.
This latest episode underscores the growing demand for transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s fight against corruption.
