RULAAC: Assault on Police Orderly by professor shows misuse of personnel

The Executive Director of Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), Mr. Okechukwu Nwanguma, has condemned the action of Professor Zainab Duke Abiola, who ordered her domestic staff to beat up her police orderly, Woman Inspector Teju Moses, over her refusal to do household chores.

According to Nwanguma, the incident has highlighted the misuse and abuse of police officers as errand boys and girls, and as domestic servants.

It will be recalled the police management team had repeatedly called for the abolishment of Police personnel being attached to Very Important People (VIP), stressing that the personnel was not enough to handle crimes happening every day, incurring securing lives and property.

Nwanguma, a human rights activist, known for fighting for the betterment of the police force and personnel and attacking them in the face of human rights violations, said: “Assault on a police officer is a crime prohibited under the Police Act. It attracts three years in prison.  The action of the so-called Professor is totally condemnable and she and her accomplices should be prosecuted. But this case once again highlights the misuse and abuse of police officers as errand boys or girls and as domestic servants.  This is demeaning of the police as a professional organization.”
